Volleyball Basics

Volleyball is a dynamic team sport that builds athleticism, coordination, and teamwork. Players learn a balance of technical skill and game awareness while developing confidence on the court.

At New West Volleyball, athletes are taught the core fundamentals that form the foundation of the game:

  • Passing (forearm pass) – controlling the first contact and delivering accurate passes to the setter.
  • Setting – using precise hand technique to position the ball for attackers.
  • Serving – starting each rally with power and accuracy, from underhand to overhand and jump serves.
  • Attacking (hitting/spiking) – generating power and timing to send the ball strategically into the opponent’s court.
  • Blocking – defending at the net with quick reactions and teamwork.
  • Defensive Skills (digging and positioning) – reading the play and reacting quickly to keep the rally alive.

Through structured drills, small-group instruction, and team play, our athletes build the physical skills, game understanding, and confidence that help them succeed both on and off the court.
